[ ६ ] together and turned them into a poem, adding, of course, whatever my wild fancy then suggested to me. I have especially enlarged on two well-known legends touching the Mogal Emperor's life, viz: that about Jagannath Rai Pandit, and the other, about the introduc- tion of gold mohors of Akabar's reign. Akabar, though a Mogal and belonging to an alien race, was deeply respected and loved by his Hindu subjects. Like the gentle Råma or Harischandra of old, Akabar lays a just claim to our esteem. He was in every sense the father of those over whom he ruled. He has left a bright example to those to whom providence has been pleased to entrust the des- tinies of a foreign race. It is much to be regretted that a variety of causes should have prevented me from publishing the poem upto this time. As it is, if my labours should be properly appreciated by the public and if I should succeed in mak- ing the already popular name of Akabar still more popular and endearing to my fellow countrymen, I should feel amply repaid. In conclusion, I heartily thank those of my friends who rendered me valuable assistance in the publication of this poem. G. W. KANITKAR.
