२ आधुनिक मराठी गद्याची उत्क्रांति कोणत्याहि दोन भाषांचा जेव्हां संबंध येतो, तेव्हां एकमेकीचे गुण एकमेकीस लागतात. विशेषतः इंग्रजी व मराठी सारख्या भिन्न भाषांची गांठ पडल्यावर हा चमत्कार नजरेत भरण्यासारखा असतो. तथापि परक्या भाषेपेक्षां देशभाषेवर होणारा परिणाम जास्त उठून दिसतो. E. Windisch नामक तज्ज्ञाने या बाबतीत काढलेल्या निष्कर्षाला जेस्पर्सन या भाषाशास्त्रज्ञाने फार महत्त्व दिले आहे. तो निष्कर्ष असा :- "It is not the foreign language a nation learns that turns into a mixed language, but its own native language becomes mixed under the influence of a foreign language."" युरोपियन व मराठी भाषा इंग्रजी भाषेच्या संसर्गार्ने पालटलेल्या मराठी भाषेची स्थिति इंग्रजी अमदानी- च्या अगोदर कशी होती, हें जाणून घेतल्याशिवाय मराठी भाषेवर झालेल्या इंग्रजी भाषेच्या परिणामाची कल्पना पूर्णपणे येणार नाहीं. मराठी भाषेच्या पूर्वस्थितीबद्दल अनेकांनी आपापली मतें व्यक्त केलेली आढळतात. विशेषतः पेशवाईच्या अंतकाली महाराष्ट्रांत वावरणाऱ्या कांहीं इंग्रज अधिकाऱ्यांनीं, त्यावेळीं वापरांत असलेलीं हस्त- लिखितें व त्यांची भाषा यांबद्दल वेळोवेळी व्यक्त केलेले विचार समजून घेणें आवश्यक आहे. उत्तर कोकणचा कोणी एक कलेक्टर तत्कालीन मराठी भाषा व वाङ्मय यांबद्दल तारीख २ डिसेंबर, १८२३ रोजी लिहितो, "I conceive it is too generally known to be doubted, that though many of the literary works of the Hindoos contain sublime philosophy both natural and moral yet I believe it is not less certain that in the generality of works now extant these truths are drawn either in such a mystical garb as to render their meaning obscure in the highest degree, or else are couched in such figuratively fantastic and obscure language as entirely to render unavailing the doctrine intended, or rather perhaps not intended, to be taught to the world, and at all events to make it anything rather than desirable that such works in their uncalled state should become the basis of education.४" पेशवाईच्या अंतकालीं प्रचारांत असलेलें मराठी वाङ्मय नवीन स्थापन होणाऱ्या शाळांमधून कितपत उपयोगी पडेल हे ठरविण्याची वेळ जेव्हां आली, तेव्हां ३ Otto Jesperson.
