१७० पुराणनिरीक्षण. चर्चितायां ( ताम्बां ) समाराध्य लिप्सते भूभरापहः । ततस्त्रिषु सहस्रेषु दशाधिकशतत्रये ॥ ३ ॥ भविष्यन्नंदराज्यं च चाणक्यो यान्हनिष्यति । ततस्त्रिषु सहस्रेषु विंशत्या चाधिकेषु च ॥ ४ ॥ भविष्यो विक्रमादित्यो राज्यं सोऽत्र प्रलप्स्यते । ततः शतसहस्रेषु शतेनाप्यधिकेषु च ॥ ५ ॥ शको नाम भविष्यश्च योऽतिदारिद्र्यहारकः ॥ या श्लोकांचा इतिहासाला कितपत उपयोग आहे हे कळतेंच आहे; तथापि पुराणांतून कसा मजकूर आढळतो याच्या मासल्याकरितां वरील उतारा येथे दिलेला आहे. ( ४ ) प्रचलित पुराणें व महाभारत यांच्या परस्परसंबंधाविषयों प्रो. ई. डब्ल्यू • हॉपकिन्स् यांनी आपल्या The great Epic of India (1902) या पुस्तकांत बरीच चर्चा केलेली आहे. (पृ. ४७–५४ पहा. ) त्यांचें मत थोडक्यांत येथें उतरून घेतों :-- “ Most of the extant puranas are in their present shape certainly later than the Epic. Never-the-less, before the great epic was completed, the eighteen puranas were known, since they are mentioned as a group (18-5-46 and 6-97.) Further a Vâyapurana is mentioned in 3-191-16....... Taken altogether, the epic account seems to be an extended and exaggerated one of that in the Váyu purana, but it is im- possible to say whether it is really based on the extant text or not. The puránic version, however, does not seem to be taken from the epic account, and as the latter is expres said to be from the Purâna, it is reasonable to suppose that the मार्कडेयोपाख्यान ( Markandeya episode ) was inserted
