2 ] "From Mahâdeva's coronation to the birth of Parîkshit, it is one thousand and one years* less hy fifty.† The authority for this is, that there is a tradition that 836 years passed from (the coronation of) Parikshit to the coronation of Mahapadma. " 5 The Vâyupurâna bases its own calculation of ( 1001- 50) 951 years for the period between the birth of Parîkshit and the coronation of Mahadeva, on an older tradition that a period of 836 years passed from (the coronation of) Parikshit to that of Mahâpadma. This chronological fact, which is very important, is entirely lost sight of in the later versions of the futurity-accounts and thus later Puranies have misinterpreted these verses of the Vayu Purâna. We shall now see how the Váyu Purána bases its calcu-

  • एकवर्षसहस्रं is 1001 years and not 1000 years. Compare ' यजु-

वेंदस्य एकशतशाखा भवंति । ' ( महाभाष्य ), where एकशत means one hundred and one. Also fe (of Aryabhata) means one hundred and eight Aryas' of Aryabhata. f† Compare for similar rendering Vishnupuräna, Book IV, 25., Wilson's translation, p. 230. That the words 'TRA तु may mean It was 1001 years less by fifty,' may be shown by another quotation about the date of Sankaracharya, recorded in a traditional verse, thus:- " चतुःसहस्रे द्विशतोत्तरे गते । तिष्येऽवतीर्णो भुवि शंकरार्यः ॥ "Shankarâchârya was born in this world after 4000 years less by two hundred, had passed of the Kali age" (i. c., after 3800 years had passed of the Kali age).
