1 The essay on Banabhatta which Mr. Pandurang shastri Parkhi published in 1905 has the good fortune of getting into a second edition, a rare good fortune for a Marathi book. There are few books in Marathi literature of recent times which as pure high class literature can equal Mr. Pandurang shastri's essay on Bana bhatta.... Mr. Pandurang shastri deserves great credit for the acurate and critical study and research which he has brought to bear on the subject of Banabhatta's life and works. It is a rare rrence for a shastri of the old school to engage in critical study and analysis of evidence dealeng with ancient dynasties, and in polemical controversies with European scholars. In Marathi especially Mr. Pandurang shastri's work is the first attempt of its kind to awaken a taste and interest in archological study among pure Marathi readers. This is the best way of enriching our literature and Mr. Pandurang shastri deserves our warm thanks and hearty good wishes for his success. It is necessary that a taste for healthy reading should be caltivated among our people and Mr. Panduring shastri's book will best contribute to the development of such a taste. I earnestly hope that the response of the public will be prompt and hearty so as to afford encouragement to the shastri bowa to persevere in his efforts in the production of other works of equal merit.
