" शुरे विदुषिच विभजन्दानं मानंच युगपदेकत्र । अविहितयाथासंख्यः स जयति सत्याश्रयः सुचिरम् || 1 The king in consequence of his possessing these men and elephants, treats his neighbours with contempt. He is of the Kshatriya caste, and his name is Pulakeshi. His plans and undertakings are wide-spread, and his beneficent actions are felt over a great distance. His subjects obey him with perfect submission. At the present time Siladitya Maharaja has conquered the nations from east to west and carried his arm to remote districts, but the people of this country alone have not submitted to him. He has gathered troops from the five Indies, and summoned the best leaders from all countries and himself gone at the head of his army to punish and subdue these people but he has not vet conquered their troops. Hiuen Tsiang Vol. II. P. P. 256-57. At present the great King Silàditya (Harshavardhana) carries his victorious arms from the east to the west; he subdues distant peoples and makes the neighbouring nations fear him, but the people of this kingdom alone have not submitted. Although he be often at the head of all the troops of the five Indies, though he has summoned the bravest generals of all the kingdoms and though has marchaed himself to punish them,he has not yet been able to vanquish their opposition. From this we may judge of their warlike habits and manners. 22 II Ind. Ant, Vol. VII, P. 291,
