फार अनुकूल ग्रह उत्पन्न होऊन त्यांतील बायजाबाई किंवा भीमाबाई ह्यांच्या सारख्या सुप्रसिद्ध व लोकोत्तर स्त्रियांची चरित्रे महाराष्ट्र भाषेत प्रसिद्ध करणे अत्यंत अवश्य आहे असे वाटल्यावांचून राहत नाहीं.
बायजाबाईंच्या चरित्राची साधनें फारशीं उपलब्ध न झाल्यामुळें त्यांचे चरित्र अतिशय संक्षिप्त व त्रोटक असें झालें आहे. परंतु त्या योगानें त्यांच्या राजकारणचातुर्याची व इतर अनेक गुणांची कल्पना करण्यास हरकत नाहीं. राजकारण व इतिहास ह्यांचा परस्पर संनिकट संबंध असल्यामुळें ख-या इतिहासाच्या अभावीं बायजाबाईचीं राजकारस्थानें आजपर्यंत निव्वळ गप्पा बनून राहिली आहेत. त्यांस इतिहासाची खरी मदत मिळेल, त्या वेळी तींच राजकारणें अधिक गंभीर व विचारार्ह अशीं भासतील. बायजाबाईंच्या वेळच्या कित्येक राजकारणांचा उलगडा करण्यास त्यावेळचा खरा इतिहास अवश्य प्रसिद्ध झाला पाहिजे. त्यावांचून पुष्कळ गोष्टींचा खुलासा होणे शक्यच नाहीं. अशा गोष्टी जरी एकीकडे ठेविल्या, तरी बायजाबाईंच्या कारकीर्दीत नेटिव्ह संस्थानांच्या वारसासंबंधाने गव्हरनरजनरल लॉर्ड आह्मर्स्ट ह्यांनी जो उदारपणा दाखविला, तो फार लक्ष्यांत घेण्यासारखा आहे१ . त्या वेळीं एतद्देशीय संस्थानिकांस
