२६२ 'साक्षात्परिचय ' cessively paes and are sounded is the terminus both of the upper or nasal arc and of the lower arc and it has the meaning of prohibition, negation, etc. " माकुरु (Do not do ) "" (without delay ) etc. 22 This negative &c. meaning is derived from the fact that the position of the letter of the series of the Alphabet is terminal and that no other letter-sound succeeds the sound of "". Likewise "" being the nasal immediately preceeding the nasal "", becomes naturally the end or terminus both of the upper or nasal arc and of the lower or mouth arc in cases of persons who from any cause whatever cannot close the two lips, or have lost, especially the upper lip, or who have their lips reverted or have the front teeth-row protruding beyound the lips and the dental "" there- fore, naturally takes the place of the labial "" and accordingly, "" has become the particle denoting nega- tion, privation etc. in the case of all persons whether Vaidik or non-Vaidik. 6

The whole series of Simple letters of the Vaidik or Sanskrit Alphabet (or) as divided for the practical purposes of vocalisation begins with the guteral vowel-letter , and ends with the labial nasal . Hence the word is rightly deemed to symboli- cally represent all the sounds of the whole series of the Vaidik or Sanskrit simple Alphabet, and has received the meaning-to epeak, to utter, to vocalize &c. any Vaidik or Sanskrit letter word &c.

This, therefore, proves that the whole series of the letters of the Vaidik Alphabet as contained in the fourteen transcendental Sutras (Wilson's gr. 1841 p.6).
