२४ चातुर्वर्ण्य. atom of oxygen where as the symbol for the second class means that two atoms of iron combine with three atoms of Oxygen. The combining power of iron in the first class is said to be dauble that of a fixed unit or an atom of a substance, called Hydrogen, whereas the combin- ing power of Iron in the second class is known to be triple with reference to the same unit Accordingly, Iron is said to be dyad as well as triad. The question or point of observation and consideration is why should Iron which is one and the same substance in the two classes of compounds exhibit two different combining powers? No investigation has yet succeeded in finding ont the reason of the exhibition of different combining powers of elementary substances. The sound, like the iron in the above mentioned cases, adapts itself to states of consciousness on the one hand and external objects, mental conditions, &c. on the other. The adaptation or exhibition of the selecting power can only be known by means of the T. S. Aa an additional illustration there may be mentioned the case of the Power of Crystallization. Investigation has not yet succeeded in discovering the mode in which such crystals are produced. The pro- vince of ignorance in that respect is enlarged when it is found that when common salt and Nitre are dissolved together in water the two substances assume their re- spective forms. The power in a substance of selecting its own form of crystalization is certainly a living power.
