Bodas Esqr. M.A., LL. B., Ganesh Janardan Agashe Esqr. B. I., J. R. Gliarpure Fsqr. B. A., LL. B. (Honours in law). The last-named gentleman hos made a careful study of the old Sanskrit literature on Law, the results of which will be embodied in this book.

For the purpose of ensuring accuracy and correctness of words and phrases newly coined either by the Editor or by the several writers who have written in Marathi on different scientific subjects, there is formed Standing Council of Referees in Bombay. Every new word is submitted to some one or more of them for approval, improvement or correction. There are also some persons in the mofussil who are always kind enough to assist the Editor by correspondence.

In this Introductory Note, it will not be out of place if a brief indication is made of the lines on which were prepared the technical lists of Marathi words in the different Departments of Science. Tho Editor first read and marked most of the books published hitherto in Marathi on each of these subjects, made a tabular statement of the several Marathi words for the same corresponding English word, and then submitted such lists to experts or an expert in that subject for approval, improvement or correction. For instance, on the subject of Botany about eight persons, Sir Dr. Bhalchandra Krishna Bhatawadekar L.M. Kt., Lieut. Col. K. R. Kirtikar L.M.S. F.L.S., &c., &c. Dr. Pandurang Gopal Mantri G. G. M. C., Dr. A. N. Sambhare L. M. & S., Dr. L. B. Dhurgalkar L. M. & S., K. B. Marathe Esqr. M.A., L.L.B., V. V. Bhide Esqr. B.A., V. L. Bhave Esqr. B.Sc. have either written books or delivered lectures, or have coined words specially for this Dictionary. A tabular statement of the words coined by these eight gentlemen was made and sent for revision to several persons. Dr. A. N. Sambhare, Dr. Dhargalkar, and V. L. Bhave Esqr. returned the lists with their additions, corrections and improve ments, and the results thus obtained were incorporated in the Manuscript. Exactly the same procodure was followed with regard to other Departments of Science.

In the Departments of Chemistry and Physics, the joint judgment of Dr. M. G. Deshmukh B.A., B.Sc., M.D. and Prof. T. K. Gajjar M.A., B.Sc., Director of the Techno-Chemical Laboratory, Bombay, perhaps the only institution of its kind in the whole of India, was considered final. Dr. M. G. Deshmukh was kind enough to spare about a week of his most valuable time to coin a new comprehensive terminology of Chemistry making the best use possible of the labours of the "नागरीप्रचारिणी सभा " in this Department of Science. And these learned labours of the Doctor will remain behind him as an enduring monument to his genius. It is also intended to include in this work Prof. Gujjar's new terminology of Chemistry which is really the best evidence of his great scholarship, ingenuity and life-long study of Chemistry. In this connection, the Editor's warm acknowledgments are also due to A. S. Kotibhaskar Esqr. M.A. and S. W. Paranjpe Esqr. Graduate of Tokio Techno-Chemical School for their frequent assistance. Prof. Balaji Prabhakar Modak has also promised to assist.

The lists of Mathematical and Astronomical words were carefully revised by Prof. N. B. Pendse M.A., LL.B. of the Bahuddin College, Junagad. In the Departments of Mathematics and Astronomy, B. G. Tilak Esqr. B.A., LL.B. an eminent Sanskritist, Mathematician, Astronomer, distinguished in original research and the learned Author of “Orion” and “The Arctic Home in the Vedas” gave information to the Editor about several old works on Mathematics and also suggested many old words. Prof. R. N. Apte M.A., LL.B., F.R.A.S. and Prof. R. S. Athavale M.A. have also promised their assistance in these Departments of the Dictionary. Prof. Athavale has supplied two or Three very important words which the Editor thinks have materially raised the value of this first part of the work. Words in Astrology and Astronomy are being carefully verified by V. N. Katakkar Esqr. and Jiwanrao Chitnis Esqr.

Dr. G. K. Garde L. M. & S. and Dr. M. R. Ranade, the Editor of the Bhishagwilas Magazine have promised to revise each word in the Department of Medicine. And the Medical words in the letter " A" were carefully examined by Dr. M. G. Deshmukh, Dr. G. K. Garde, Dr. A. N. Sambbare. Dr. V. S. Trilokekar, and Dr. G. B. Patwardhan. Several others such as Dr. J. R. Murkute, Dr G B. Kher have also promised to assist the Editor in this Department and their services will be mare definitely acknowledged after their actual contributions to the work.

In the Department of Philosophy, Prof. D. G. Padhye M.A. and Prof. S. G. Sathe M.A. have kindly promised to assist, and the renderings of the two important terms of Philosophy in the letter
