B.--A great difficulty is experienced in fixing appropriate and distinct words for architecture, artificer, artisan and artist. Our old word freq applies to all the Mechanical arts and therefore to denote any one particular art we propose that the significant name of that art should be prefixed to the word शिल्प; as गृहशिल्प for Architecture, पाषाणशिल्प for Sculpture &c. &c. After great thought and consultation with some experts we have come to the conclusion that the word of should be restricted to Fino art and free to Mechanical art. In the two words artificer and artisan there is the common idea of Mechanical art or शिल्प and therefore शिल्पकार will be an appropriate word for Artisan ; हिकमती शिल्पकार, कल्पक शिल्पकार, कल्पक शिल्पी will be quite appropriate words for Artificer. An Artificer is one, who applies the resources of art to constructive manufacture. An artist is one who exercises any fine art well. therefore कलाभिश or कलापट will be an appropriate . ord for Artist. In popular Marathi, no distinction is made between Artist and Artisan. The word रागार is indiscriminately used for both. We would suggest that the word of should be restricted altisan vnly.
