The Etymology Skeat and Murray are the chief authorities in this Department. Wherever available, Sanskrit origins of English words are given; but only such of them as are accepted by the best Philologists. Only in a few cases the Editor has made new suggestions of Sanskrit origins. But this is done in the form of a small note to that particular Ford. The Editor has given roots principally from Latin, Greek, French, Anglo-Saxon and Arabic sources.
With a view to saving space, the principles of Condensation adopted in some of the English Dictionaries are followed in this work. Every word is given in its Alphabetical order. Generally a word and its derivatives are given together. For instance Assign, Assignment, Assigned, Assignee, Assignable, Assignability, Assigner are all given under Assign.
The irregular participles of uncompounded verbs are given. Exceptional plurals of nouns are also given. When a word stands after another with its Marathi renderings not given, its renderings can be at once formed from those of the latter by adding a corresponding rendering of the affix in the English words.

B.A. and Krishnaji Ballal Vaze Esqr. B.A. ( pages 24-40), A. H. Kher Esqr. B.A. (pages 40-48), A. G. Sathaye Esqr M.A (pages 8 only), V. K. Bhatiwadekar Esqr. B.A., LL.B. ( pages 8 only ), V. K. Oak Esqr. (a few pages) K. B. Paranjpe Esqr. B.A. (pages 5 only) and Narayan Chintaman Kelkar Esqr. B.A. (pages 104-112). Almost every word Technical or Scientific was revised by some one or another from the Standing Council of Referees. After this careful revision and scrutiny, if any mistakes or inaccuracies still remain the Editor hopes that they will be but few in number. And if any one will be kind enough to draw his attention to them, he will publish them all in & Supplementary Volume to the world when completed.

The sounds of unmarked vowels are always short; as in bad, bod, bid, box, but, book. In the consonants used in the new spelling of each pronunciation, every consonant has its ordinary unvarying sound, and every consonant has one sound only. The same sounds are represented by the same letters even if their actual spelling in the language is different. No consonant is marked, "th" when printer in italics is to be sounded as in then and when printed in common letters is to be sounded as in thick. The vowel u when printed as ü is to be sounded as in Müller. When more than one pronunciation of a word is given, that given first is the one more accepted.
